Ascension Parish Library is not only a library of books, but also of things and experiences. Try a new craft, strum a ukulele, plan a family board game night, or go on a birding walk by using your library card.

How to Check Out Things

Most Library of Things items can be placed on hold in the library catalog with an active APL card and picked up at a library location.

Adventure Passes can be reserved online through our ticketing system. Call one of our locations for assistance.

The telescopes can only be checked out from and returned to their original library locations, which are named in the library catalog.

How to Return Materials

Library of Things materials must be returned to the checkout desk at any library location (unless otherwise specified at checkout) during regular operation hours. To avoid damages, please do not return items to our book drops.

Borrower Responsibility

Library cardholders can borrow up to two Things at a time for a period of two weeks. Borrowers accept responsibility for the return of all parts included with Things. While fines may not be charged for minor damages and loss of some parts, the library reserves the right to charge for replacement parts if deemed necessary. Borrowers will be charged for items that are not returned.

 Help

Need additional information or help using items from our Library of Things? Check out the links below.

    • An Adventure Pass is either a physical or digital ticket that allows free admission to one of our partner organizations.

Digital pass confirmations are emailed to you after you make a reservation.

Physical passes must be picked up at the library location named on your pass confirmation.

    • Any Ascension Parish resident of any age with an Ascension Parish Library card in good standing can check out an Adventure Pass. The library cardholder named on the pass must be present to redeem the pass at the museum. Adults must show a photo ID at the museum’s or nature center’s admissions desk.

    • Adventure Passes can be reserved at our website. You need your library card number and PIN to complete the reservation. PIN numbers are created by combining the first three letters of your last name in all caps and the last five digits of your library card number.

Digital pass confirmations are emailed to you after you make the reservation. You may print the pass confirmation or show it on a mobile device at the admissions desk at the partner organization.

Physical passes must be picked up at the library location named on your pass confirmation. The USS Kidd is the only partner organization that requires a physical pass that must be picked up at the library.

    • A digital pass is reserved online. The confirmation email you receive is your “ticket” or “pass” for admissions into the museum or nature center. You can present the confirmation as a paper printout, or display the confirmation on your mobile device upon arrival at the museum or nature center.

A physical pass is reserved online, but must be picked up and returned at one of our library locations. It is available for use within a seven day time frame. Currently, the USS Kidd pass is the only physical Adventure Pass. We recommend that you reserve the USS Kidd pass for the date you want to pick it up. You will have an additional six days to visit the museum and return the pass to the library.

    • The USS Kidd is the only partner organization that requires a physical pass.

It must be picked up and dropped off within the reservation window stated when you make your reservation. The reservation window lasts for seven days, including the date of pickup. We recommend that you reserve your pass for the date you plan to pick it up. That will allow you six days to visit the museum and return the pass to the library.

The pass must be picked up and dropped off only at the library location chosen at the time of reservation.
